But here’s the problem: hot air is slow. It’s a bottleneck. Think about it. With convection, you’re basically heating up a giant box of air and hoping that heat eventually finds its way to your substrate. It takes forever. You’re sitting there wasting hours of cycle time just waiting for the chamber to catch up. Cut out the middleman That’s where infrared (IR) lamps come in. Instead of warming up the room, IR radiation shoots energy straight into the sensor material. It’s almost instant. We’re talking about cutting your ramp-up times from minutes down to seconds. When you’re dealing with thousands of wafers, those saved seconds add up fast. Your daily throughput just jumps because you aren’t fighting that convection lag anymore. Less bulk, more punch Switching to IR isn’t just about the clock; it’s about your floor space. Huge hot air ovens are a pain—they take up a massive amount of room. IR arrays are tiny by comparison. You can tuck them right into your fabrication line without rearranging the whole shop. Just a heads-up, though: because IR hits so hard and so fast, you have to be careful. If your PID controllers aren’t dialed in, you can easily overshoot your temperature. You’ll want some high-speed thermocouples on hand so you don’t accidentally fry those delicate organic layers. Putting the heat where it actually matters The industry is moving toward IR because it lets you be precise. You can heat one specific spot on a wafer without baking the rest of the assembly. It’s much gentler on the substrate. Plus, think about your electric bill. With a hot air oven, you’re paying to heat the walls of a metal box. With IR, the energy goes exactly where it belongs: on the part. Throw in a pulsed power supply, and you’ve got total control over your curing curve. It’s just a smarter way to work.
