
Stop Dealing With Foggy Bathroom Mirrors
Most mirror heaters are pretty basic—you flip a switch, and you wait. But we’re starting to do things differently. We’re hooking short-wave infrared (IR) heaters up to smart home setups. Imagine this: you’re still in bed, or maybe you’re brewing your first cup of coffee, and you tell your house to get the bathroom ready. By the time you actually walk in, the mirror is already warm and crystal clear. No more wiping away steam with a towel.
Why IR actually works
If you’ve used those old-school heating pads, you know they’re slow. They have to warm up the glass first, which feels like it takes forever. Infrared is different. It doesn’t mess around with the glass; it sends heat in a straight line. It hits the mirror and you instantly. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a beam of sunlight. We usually set these up with low-voltage DC or switched AC. Either way, the goal is speed. A good IR setup hits its top temperature in a few seconds.Fast. Really fast.
Making it “Smart”
To get this working with your phone or voice assistant, we use a relay or a PWM controller. We just plug these into your Zigbee or Matter network. So, when you trigger your “Morning” routine, the hub tells the relay to close the circuit, and the heat kicks in. But we can’t just leave the heat blasting forever—that’s a recipe for cracked glass. We build in timers and thermal cut-offs. If the mirror hits about 40°C, the system just throttles back. It keeps things safe without you having to think about it.
The tricky part (Installation)
Here’s the thing: adding all this tech makes the wiring a bit more crowded. You’ll need a spot for the power supply and controller, usually tucked away behind the vanity or in a junction box. You also have to be careful with your wires. If the gauge is too thin, you’ll lose voltage, and the mirror won’t get nearly as hot. Plus, make sure your smart relay can handle the load. If it’s not rated for a heating element, it’ll burn out way sooner than it should.
