
Why we put our heaters through hell before they hit your bathroom
Bathrooms are basically torture chambers for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and the occasional direct splash of water. Now, on paper, an IPX5 rating means the unit can handle water jets from any angle. But here’s the thing: a seal that works on day one isn’t always a seal that works on day 500. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We throw every batch of our infrared lamps into humid-heat chambers to find the breaking point before the product ever reaches your ceiling. The problem with steam Water droplets are one thing, but vapor is a different beast. Steam can sneak through gaps that liquid water can’t even touch. It migrates into the housing and settles on the electrical contacts and the quartz lamp. If a gasket shrinks or a sealant gets brittle, you’re looking at a short circuit. We use these high-humidity chambers to speed up that wear and tear. We basically force the moisture to hunt for the weakest spot in the seal. If there’s a leak, we’ll find it. The “breathing” effect Infrared lamps get hot. Really hot. When the lamp kicks on, the housing expands. When it cools down, it contracts. This creates a sort of “breathing” effect that can actually suck moist air right into the internal wiring. We don’t just test if it’s waterproof once. We put them through 500 hours of heating and cooling cycles. We’re looking for the tiny cracks in the potting compound or a bit of rust on the terminals. We want to know exactly how the unit holds up after months of real-world use. Finding the sweet spot You might think, “Just seal it tighter then.” But there’s a catch. If you seal a unit too tightly, the heat gets trapped inside. If the air can’t move, the internal wiring can actually cook itself. It’s a balancing act. We have to make the seal tight enough to keep the steam out, but open enough so the unit can breathe. It takes some tinkering to get it right. But once it survives our aging chamber? You can trust it’ll survive your shower.
