
How to actually pick the right wattage for your bathroom heater
Here is a common mistake: thinking that the most powerful heater is always the best. It isn’t. If you just grab the biggest lamp on the shelf, you’ll probably end up wasting electricity or, worse, feeling like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. It’s all about the balance between the room size and how high your ceiling is.
Getting the power right for your space
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—you know, those little spaces under 4m²—a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. You just want a bit of warmth, not a sauna. But for a big master bath (around 8m² to 12m²), one small lamp won’t cut it. You’re better off installing a few 600W or 800W units to spread the warmth around. Here is the thing: if you cram a 1000W lamp into a tiny bathroom, it’s going to feel aggressive. Instead of a cozy glow, it can feel like a stinging heat. Plus, that constant “heat soak” can actually burn out the element faster. On the flip side, if you go too low in a big room, the heat just vanishes before it ever reaches you.
The trick to where you put them
Infrared is different because it heats you, not the air. Because of that, where you mount the lamp matters just as much as the wattage. High-wattage lamps have a tighter, more intense beam. They’ll warm you up fast, but they create a “hot spot.” If you’re standing right under it, you’re roasting; step two feet to the left, and you’re chilly. And keep an eye on your ceiling height. A lamp tucked into a 2.1-meter ceiling feels a lot warmer than one sitting at 2.4 meters. If your ceilings are higher, you’ll need a bit more power to get that same cozy feeling on the floor.
A quick warning about your wiring
Before you go wild with the high-wattage lamps, please check your circuit load. If you slap three 800W lamps on a single bathroom circuit, you might find yourself staring at a tripped breaker. It’s just too much draw for standard wiring to handle continuously. If you’re planning a high-heat zone, just run a dedicated line. It keeps the voltage steady and means your lamps will actually last as long as they’re supposed to.
