
Getting the Heat Right in Your Bathroom
When it comes to picking an infrared lamp for the bathroom, the biggest mistake people make is thinking “more power equals more comfort.” It doesn’t. I’ve seen way too many engineers slap a massive, high-wattage lamp into a space that doesn’t need it. They end up wasting power and killing the bulb’s lifespan. On the flip side, some go too small, and you’re left shivering in a damp room despite the heater being on full blast. It’s all about the space. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W shortwave lamp usually does the trick. It gives you that instant hit of warmth the second you flip the switch. But if you’ve got a big master bath or high ceilings, you’ll want to bump that up to 800W or 1200W. Put a 1200W unit in a small stall and you’re basically making an oven. Put a 400W lamp in a wide-open room with cold tiles and big mirrors, and the heat just disappears before it ever reaches you. Here’s the cool thing about infrared: it heats you, not the air. Bathrooms are tricky because air is always escaping through vents or moving around. With infrared, you don’t have to wait for the whole room to warm up. You feel it immediately. Whenever we’re working on the shop floor, we use a simple rule of thumb: aim for about 100W to 150W per square meter. It’s a solid starting point for staying cozy. One thing to watch out for: your wiring. Sure, high-wattage lamps heat up faster. But they also pull a lot more current. If you’re retrofitting an older building, your breakers might not be up for the task. If your electrical panel is struggling, don’t force a single massive lamp into the circuit. Instead, try spreading a few low-wattage lamps across the ceiling. You get the same warmth, but your fuses stay happy.
