Let’s be honest: chicken coops are brutal on equipment. Between the constant dust and the damp air from all those birds breathing, most electronics just give up. That’s why we built our waterproof infrared heaters to take a beating while still keeping your flock warm. But the real magic happens when you stop flipping manual switches and let a smart system do the heavy lifting.
How it actually works
Unlike a space heater that just blows warm air around, infrared is different. It sends heat straight to the birds. The second you flip the switch, they feel it. No waiting. No lag. To make this “smart,” we basically use a digital trigger to flip a heavy-duty relay. Because coops are so humid, we’ve sealed the housing tight. You don’t have to worry about moisture seeping in and frying the wiring.
Getting it connected
If you want to control everything from your phone, you’ll need a smart gateway (usually Zigbee or Wi-Fi). Here is the setup: you pick your temperature in the app, the gateway sends a signal, and a heavy-duty contactor handles the actual power. We use that contactor as a shield; it takes the brunt of the electrical load so the delicate smart chip doesn’t melt. **Pro tip:**Put your temperature sensors down where the birds actually live. If you stick them on the ceiling, you’re just measuring the hottest air in the room, and your heaters will shut off while your chickens are still shivering.
A few things to watch out for
Smart tech is great, but it isn’t perfect. The biggest risk? Your internet. If your router crashes, your automation does too. That’s why we always tell people to keep a physical override switch on the wall. It’s your safety net. Also, don’t let your heater “flutter.” If it’s clicking on and off every two minutes, you’re going to burn out the element way too fast. You’ll want to set a bit of a gap—a few degrees—between when the heat kicks in and when it shuts off. It saves the hardware and keeps the temperature steady.
