
Getting Your Wafer Heat Just Right
If you’ve ever dealt with silicon wafers, you know how finicky they are. One wrong move with the heat and you’ve got a warped wafer. It’s a nightmare. To stop that from happening, we use gold-coated reflectors in our clean room lamps. Why gold? Because we can’t afford to let that precious energy leak into the lamp housing where it does nothing for you.
Why we stick with gold
Look, aluminum reflectors are common, but they soak up too much energy. They’re just not efficient enough for this. Gold is different. It’s the gold standard for a reason—it reflects infrared light better than almost anything else. Instead of letting photons wander off in the wrong direction, the gold mirror pushes them straight down onto the wafer. The best part? You get more heat exactly where you need it without having to crank up the wattage. Your power bill stays low, and your wafers hit the target temperature way faster.
Dealing with the heat
Here is the catch: when you concentrate that much energy, things get hot. Really hot. Since the gold coating is so efficient, it packs a punch. You’ve got to make sure your bench cooling can actually keep up. If your housing isn’t vented properly, that heat soak will eventually eat through the internal seals. We also use high-purity quartz tubes. In a wafer fab, a single speck of contamination can ruin everything. We strip every bit of organic residue off the assembly before it leaves the shop because “almost clean” isn’t clean enough.
Making it work in your shop
These lamps are designed to be simple drop-in replacements for your standard IR benches. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the focal length. We want to make sure there are no “cold spots” across the wafer. If you notice the heating looks uneven, don’t panic. Usually, it’s just a misalignment between the element and the mirror. A quick tweak usually fixes it. A few pro tips for the install: ***Use a stable PID controller.**It stops the temperature from overshooting and frying your work. ***Wear gloves.**Seriously. Gold coatings hate fingerprints. The oils from your skin can actually burn into the surface, leaving permanent dark spots that you can’t scrub off.
