Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right
Let’s be honest: there is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a bathroom that feels like a walk-in freezer. If you’re looking into infrared heating to fix this, you’ve got to think about more than just the heat. Bathrooms are humid, steamy, and full of water. That’s why you need to look for anIP66 rating. Basically, it means the unit is sealed tight enough that dust and high-pressure water sprays can’t get into the electrical bits. It’s a safety must.
How much power do you actually need?
The wattage is what decides how fast you’ll actually feel the warmth on your skin. It really comes down to the size of your room. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W short-wave lamp is usually plenty. It hits you with a concentrated beam of heat the second you turn it on. But for those bigger master baths (around 8m² to 12m²), you’ll need more muscle. You can go with one big 1200W unit, or spread out three 400W lamps across the ceiling so you don’t end up with any chilly corners. Just a heads-up: don’t go overboard. If you put a massive heater in a tiny closet of a bathroom, you might trip the thermal cutoff or overheat the whole fixture. On the flip side, if you go too low, you get “ghost heating”—where the lamp is glowing, but you’re still shivering.
The trade-off with sealed heaters
Here’s the thing about those IP66 seals. Since they keep water out, they also trap heat inside the fixture. To stop the wiring from frying, we use aluminum heat sinks and high-temp gaskets to pull that heat away. Just make sure your wiring is thick enough to handle the current. You don’t want a voltage drop making your expensive heater feel like a lukewarm lightbulb.
Where to put it
Keep in mind that short-wave infrared doesn’t really heat the air—it heats you. I recommend mounting the lamps about 2.1 to 2.4 meters off the floor. It’s the sweet spot. Too high, and the heat vanishes before it reaches you. Too low, and it starts to feel like you’re standing too close to a campfire. Get the height right, and you’ve got that perfect, cozy glow the moment you step out of the tub.
