
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be honest: putting high-voltage heating lamps in a room full of steam and splashing water is a bit like playing with fire. If you want that IP65 rating—meaning it can actually handle the moisture—you have to obsess over two things. You need to keep the water away from the guts of the machine, and you need to make sure the outer shell stays completely dead. If you mess this up, you’re not just looking at a broken heater. You’re looking at ground faults or, worse, a lethal shock.
Getting the Insulation Right
We don’t take chances here. We use a mix of sealed gaskets and thick potting compounds at the connection points to lock everything down. The heating element itself sits inside a high-purity quartz tube, which is fine. But the real danger? That’s where the wires actually hit the lamp. To stop moisture from “climbing” inside the wire insulation—which happens more often than you’d think—we use reinforced silicone seals and heat-shrink tubing with adhesive linings. It basically creates a waterproof dam. And look, even with the best housing in the world, things can fail. That’s why youmustwire these into a dedicated GFCI circuit. Think of the GFCI as your last line of defense. If something goes wrong, it kills the power before you do.
The Battle Between Heat and Air
Here’s the tricky part. To keep water out, these enclosures have to be airtight. But when you seal a high-wattage lamp in a tight box, the heat has nowhere to go. If the internal temperature spikes too high, the wire insulation starts to degrade. Eventually, it cracks, and you get a short. To stop this, we use aluminum heat sinks. They pull the heat away from the electrical junctions and dump it into the air so the internals can breathe.
A Few Tips for the Install
When you’re actually wiring these up, resist the urge to crank down the cable glands. I’ve seen it happen a dozen times—someone over-tightens the gland, crushes the gasket, and suddenly there’s a perfect little path for steam to leak straight in. Use a torque wrench and stick to the specs. Also, if you’re putting these into an old bathroom, keep an eye on your voltage drop.
