
Stop Your Lamps From Ruining Your Wafers
In a high-volume production line, a lamp bursting is a nightmare. It’s not just about the machine stopping for a few hours. It’s the mess. When a quartz tube pops, you’ve got glass shards and halogen gas raining down directly onto your wafers. Just like that, an entire batch is trash. We build our digital infrared dryer controllers and lamp assemblies specifically to make sure that never happens. Keeping things cool (and intact) Most lamps burst because of thermal shock or a sudden spike in voltage. It’s like pouring boiling water into a cold glass—it just cracks. That’s why our controllers don’t just slam the lamp to full power the second you hit start. We use PID loops to ramp the power up gradually. It gives the quartz time to expand slowly and safely. We use high-purity fused quartz because it can take the heat, but let’s be honest: it’s still glass. It’s fragile. To fix that, we wrap the lamp in a “containment sleeve.” Think of it as a safety net. If the tube does fail, the sleeve catches the debris. Your wafers stay clean, and you don’t have to spend the day scrubbing a machine. Hardware that actually holds up You can’t run a high-wattage lamp on a cheap, flimsy circuit. If your voltage is jumping all over the place, the filament gets stressed. Eventually, it just gives up. We keep the voltage tolerance tight. It makes the lamps last longer and stops those sudden, loud “pops” in the middle of a shift. We also put a lot of focus on the connectors. If they aren’t reinforced, you get arcing at the terminals. That creates these tiny, intense heat spots that can crack the ends of the tube. A secure, tight fit means the lamp can take a beating without failing at the seal. The one trade-off Here is the honest part: adding a protective sleeve does block a tiny bit of the infrared light. You lose a small percentage of the output. To make up for it, you might need to bump up the power or let the wafers dwell a bit longer to hit your target temperature. It’s a small tweak, but it’s a lot better than losing a whole lot of expensive wafers to a shattered bulb.
